Gibson made headlines last week by hitting Donald Trump with a cease-and-desist, but the esteemed guitar company is back in the news today for other reasons. A year ago, Gibson CEO Cesar Gueikian launched a new project called the Gibson Band, featuring rock stars Tony Iommi and Serj Tankian. Now Gueikian is back with another famous-people collab, this time for charity.

Brian John McBrearty’s music blurs together ambient jazz and post-rock to gorgeous effect. Or at least that’s what he does on the lead single from new album Remembering Repeating. The lineup on the new LP is McBrearty on synths, bass, and vocals; Matt Douglas on sax (also, tenor, and soprano) plus clarinet and flute; and the great Ryan Jewell on drums and percussion. On “Repeating,” they weave illuminating tones and textures around a thoughtful groove, letting the music unspool from its plaintive beginnings toward somewhere warm and joyous. Listen below.

Underground legend David Grubbs never stops making music — less than a month ago his new experimental supergroup, Squanderers, dropped their debut album — but the Gastr del Sol/Bastro/Squirrel Bait veteran has not released a solo album since 2017’s Creep Mission. He’ll change that in February with the new LP Whistle From Above. It’s also his first Drag City release in over a decade and his first all-instrumental release for the label.

In between the Misfits and his eponymous band Danzig, Glenn Danzig served as the frontman for the short-lived but incendiary goth-punk-metal band Samhain. Long before he found fame as the idiosyncratic roots-music singer-songwriter Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Will Oldham was a Louisville punk and a big Samhain fan. Years ago, Oldham wrote a Pitchfork article about his experience going on the first Samhain tour as a photographer. Evidently, he’s been tight with former Samhain drummer London May ever since, and he’s got a new song named after the man.

We almost certainly won’t get a new boygenius album next year, but all three members of that supergroup did get together to produce an LP that’s coming out next month. Jasmine Cruickshank, the Manchester artist who records under the name jasmine.4.t recorded her full-length debut You Are The Morning at LA’s famed Sound City Studios, with Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and new label boss Phoebe Bridgers as producers and occasional bandmates. We’ve heard the early tracks “Skin On Skin” and “Elephant,” and now jasmine.4.t drops the new LP’s title track.

The Texan outlaw country singer-songwriter Blaze Foley lived a chaotic life and didn’t get around to releasing much music while he still walked the mortal plane. The 39-year-old Foley was shot to death in 1989, and he’s achieved cult-favorite status since his passing. Merle Haggard and John Prine covered his songs. Lucinda Williams wrote “Drunken Angel” about him. Ethan Hawke directed a movie about his life. And now Why Bonnie has shared her version of Foley’s song “Rainbows And Ridges.”

Dutch Interior come from the greater Los Angeles area, and they specialize in a bleary, thoughtful, textured form of indie rock. Back in the summertime, Dutch Interior signed to Fat Possum and released the shoegaze-leaning single “Ecig.” Today, they’ve got another new track, and it shows a very different side of what they can do.

Angel Deradoorian has a long history of collaborative projects, going back to when she sang for Dirty Projectors and extending all the way to Decisive Pink, her duo with Kate NV, who released a really good album last year. In her solo work, Deradoorian sometimes gets assistance from other vital artists, but she always comes off as a DIY auteur, controlling her own dense and exploratory sound. That definitely comes through on the new single that she released this morning.

Earlier this year, the great underground lifer Steve Albini passed away suddenly. Over his long career, Albini engineered hundreds, or possibly, thousands, of records. When he died, Albini was in the middle of working on another one. That album was Wish Defense, the latest work from the veteran Chicago post-punk trio FACS, and it’ll come out early next year. They’ve already shared its title track. Today, we get to hear another song from the last album that Steve Albini engineered.

Early next year, the big-deal British rocker Sam Fender will release his new album People Watching. Fender recorded part of the LP with the War On Drugs’ Adam Granduciel, and the advance tracks definitely sound like something that a big-deal British rocker might make with the War On Drugs guy. Last month, Fender shared the new LP’s title track. Today, he’s got two more.

Your kid loses a tooth, and you don’t have a one-dollar bill to put under their pillow, so you leave them alone to go get change. That’s the premise of “The Tooth Fairy,” the latest song from Owen Ashworth’s Advance Base project. The song is short and simple, and Ashworth delivers it with his usual hangdog deadpan, but it’s still enough to send you into an emotional tailspin. If you’re up on Ashworth’s work, you should be used to that by now.

Earlier this year, MIKE teamed up with Tony Seltzer for the album Pinball. The New York rapper is back today with the announcement of his new LP Showbiz, arriving at the end of January. For now, he’s sharing the single “You’re The Only One Watching,” which follows last month’s “Pieces Of A Dream.”

DJ Koze’s last studio album Knock Knock was one of the Best Electronic Albums Of 2018. The German musician has kept a fairly low profile since then, although last year he released an EP and produced every track on Róisín Murphy’s album Hit Parade. Now, he’s announcing a new album of his own called Music Can Hear Us. Before it arrives in April, he’s shared the new single “Pure Love,” which features Damon Albarn.

Kesha has been teasing her new song “Delusional” with warnings on social media like, “My ex should hide on friday.” After being freed from Dr. Luke’s label earlier this year, the pop star unveiled the beloved banger “Joyride,” collaborated with Charli XCX for the “Spring breakers” remix, and covered Lindsey Buckingham for Spotify. Now, she’s unleashing “Delusional.”

Ex-Vöid announced their new album In Love Again with the release of lead single “Swansea” back in September. Today, we give thanks for the album’s second advance track. “Pinhead” is a swooning shoegaze indie-pop track that immerses Lan McArdle and Owen Williams’ vocals in distortion to pleasing effect. In September, Pa Salieu was released from prison after serving 21 months and shared the song “Belly.” Last month, the British rapper joined Disclosure onstage at Manchester’s Warehouse Project to debut a collab called “King Steps,” and now it’s gotten an official release.

I should’ve posted this track when it came out yesterday, but maybe it just took a few listens and a fun appreciation post from my homie Julianne Escobedo Shepherd over at Hearing Things to appreciate it. Or maybe the lull before a holiday weekend is jut the right time to hear a super-raunchy track with a foot-fetish streak. Either way, HiTech’s new song “Shadowrealm” is a good time, and you should hear it.

The Men, that NYC garage-punk institution, are back today with news of their next LP. Buyer Beware is coming at the end of February via Fuzz Club, and its emphatic opening track is out today. “Pony” charges ahead with significant horsepower, capturing the Men’s sheer force and unbound energy. There’s a bit of pop to it despite the gritty live-to-tape aesthetic, as Mark Perro explains in his statement:

New Zealand jangle-pop legend Martin Phillipps died unexpectedly in July at age 61. Before his passing, he had a 40-year run as the founding guitarist and only consistent member of the Chills, who put out seven studio albums between 1987 and 2021. Today, Fire Records have announced the posthumous Spring Board: The Early Unrecorded Songs, a collection of 20 songs from the band’s early years revisited.

Sleaford Mods and Hot Chip, two UK acts with vastly different approaches, have teamed up for a new two-song benefit single that they recorded together at London’s famed Abbey Road studios. Those two collaborations, “Nom Nom Nom” and “Cat Burglar,” are out together on a new 7″ that raises money for Warchild.

Over the past few days, Ed Sheeran has kicked off a lot of conversations about the Band Aid charity Christmas single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Sheeran participated in a 30th-anniversary remake of the single in 2014. Yesterady, Band Aid released a megamix of past versions, and Sheeran wrote that the megamix used his voice without his permission: “Had I had the choice I would have respectfully declined the use of my vocals. A decade on and my understanding of the narrative associated with this has changed.” In response, promoter Harvey Goldsmith dismissed the “busybodies and woke do-gooders” making an issue out of it. Sheeran hasn’t had more to say about that, but he does have a new Christmas song of his own.

The Republic Of Wolves closed out last year with the surprise album Why Would Anyone Want To Live This Long? On Thursday (Nov. 21), the Long Island band shared a cover of fellow New York native Kevin Devine’s song “Somewhere Unoccupied.”

Last month, Skeleten announced the new LP Mentalized. So far the project of Russ Fitzgibbon has shared the singles “Deep Scene,” “Love Enemy,” and “Viagra,” and now he’s back with the woozy “Bodys Chorus.”

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke has been releasing a stream of singles leading up to the release of his new album The Singing Winds Pt. 3, which comes out in January. It’s the third installment in a series of LPs he’s calling The Elements. I guess it’s supposed to evoke air and wind and atmospheric forces of the like. Today he’s shared a single called “Kintsugi,” and like previous singles “It Wasn’t Meant To Be” and “Hometown Edge,” the instrumental is made up entirely of guitar. Check it out below.

In 1984, the Boomtown Rats’ Bob Geldof and Ultravox’s Midge Ure wrote a catchy, well-intentioned, deeply problematic Christmas song about the need to help other people during the holiday season. A massive group of primarily young British stars — including Bono, Sting, Boy George, and Simon Le Bon — sang on “Do They Know It’s Christmas?,” which came out under the name Band Aid. The song became a giant UK charity hit, and it served as the blueprint for all-star charity singles like “We Are The World.” Now, “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” is turning 40, and people are still fighting about it.

Tame Impala mastermind Kevin Parker is announcing a nifty new instrument that appears to do a lot without taking up much space. Called “Orchid,” the tool was apparently developed by Parker and friends and originally conceived as a gadget for Parker’s own songwriting more than a decade ago. Meanwhile, its retro-futuristic design is by co-founder Ignacio Germade. It’s priced at $549.

When we talk about Richard Dawson on this website, it’s not about the game show host who played an evil version of himself in The Running Man. “Causing more family feuds than Richard Dawson”? No. Not that one. He died in 2012. Shout out to him, though. We’re also not talking about the new atheism guy. That’s Richard Dawkins. Instead, this Richard Dawson is a British singer-songwriter. Perhaps you weren’t confused, but I was, so we’re just clearing some things up here.

In February, Madi Diaz released her sixth album Weird Faith, and last month she shared its deluxe edition, which featured a new version of “For Months Now” with Lizzy McAlpine, the previously released Lennon Stella collab “One Less Question,” and “Worst Case Scenario.” In November, Diaz found out she was nominated for two 2025 GRAMMY awards: Best Folk Album (Weird Faith) and Best Americana Performance (“Don’t Do Me Good” featuring Kacey Musgraves).

It’s been five years since the Brooklyn-via-Athens, Georgia post-punk trio released their album Stray. In a few months, Bambara will follow that LP with Birthmarks, the new LP that they recorded with Bark Psychosis member and These New Puritans producer Graham Sutton. Lead single “Pray To Me” brings a dramatic sense of sweep and a hard-pounding near-industrial backbeat. Here’s what Bambara’s Reid Bateh says about it:

In addition to being one of our 40 Best New Artists Of 2024, West Palm Beach rapper Bossman Dlow (Devante McCreary) has spent the last year circling the zeitgeist with a TikTok viral song (“Get In With Me”), a March mixtape (Mr Beat The Road), and a ton of collabs: Ciara’s “Run It Up,” Luh Tyler’s “2 Slippery,” and his own “Finesse” with GloRilla. Four months back Bossman Dlow released “PJ” with Lil Baby, and today the hot streak continues with “The Biggest Pt. 2,” which also has a video.

Back in April, I tweeted, “the two best new emo bands of 2024 are bonus and red sun.” I am not one to toot my own horn [citation needed], but I think I called it. The two young emo bands are from far-flung locales — south Florida and Oklahoma City, respectively — but they have quickly become central figures of emo in 2024. They’ve united for a split titled Unnecessary Riffness, out next month on Wax Bodega.

Since 2007, Vidar Landa has been one of the guitarists and songwriters in Kvelertak, the phenomenal Norwegian band blending black metal with arena-scale classic rock. Today, Landa has unveiled his new solo project. It does not sound like Kvelertak.

Pop-punk incubator Hopeless Records has been celebrating its 30th anniversary all year. In addition to their traveling Hopeless Museum Exhibit (and the Rock Hall’s semi-permanent exhibit), the label has been promoting its Hopelessly Devoted To You singles series, where artists like Sweet Pill and Pinkshift put their own spin on Hopeless classics. Today Illuminati Hotties’ Sarah Tudzin has shared her cover of Neck Deep’s 2015 track “December.”

Stop whatever you’re doing. Kendrick just dropped. After probably the biggest year of his career, Kendrick Lamar has suddenly, out of nowhere, shared a new surprise album called GNX. It’s out, right now. The whole thing.

New York indie-poppers TOLEDO just shared the single “Zelda” in October, and prior to that we got April’s Popped Heart EP. Today, for Grand Jury’s ongoing 10th Anniversary project, where the label asks their bands, current and classic, to cover songs from the catalog, TOLEDO are back to cover Jordana’s 2020 track “I Wanna.”

Phoenix shoegazers Glixen have spent this year sprinkling new tracks around, first with “foreversoon” and “lust,” and more recently with “sick silent.” Now, the four-piece are announcing a new EP (their second, following last year’s She Only Said): quiet pleasures, coming February 21. Along with the news is another single, the swirling “Lick The Star.”
